Setting Your Sights or Vision for the New Year?

One of my brothers was once blind. At this time he can see well enough to read, drive, and take his beloved photographs. Interestingly, I’m sure he would tell you that there are things that seemed clearer when he could not see the world through his eyes.
A Daily OM a few years back addressed sight versus vision. The article differentiated between the two by stating sight is the ability to see the physical world, while vision is the gift of seeing beyond it. I’ll take one of each, please.
Improving our eyesight is a good thing. That’s why we utilize a whole/fresh/organic diet; antioxidants; minerals like calcium, magnesium and phosphorous; and vitamins A (especially when broken down as beta-carotene), B (especially B3/niacin and B5/pantothenic acid), C & D. Other helpers include sunlight and eye exercises, not to mention herbs like eyebright, goldenseal root, bayberry root bark with cayenne, and red raspberry leaf. I wish I had known about these before my brother lost his sight—perhaps I could have helped make things easier for him in the physical world. He has done well in spite of—a true model of courage, and surrender. For many of us we cannot imagine handling similar circumstances with such grace—we have difficulty letting go even temporarily when we close our eyes to pray, meditate, or even sleep. However it is during these times that we can become more in touch with our inner world through closing off the multitude of distractions from the outer world. It is in this “sightless” state that vision becomes our mode of seeing.
As the New Year approaches, it may be helpful to let go of life’s many distractions and focus on our vision. What do you want to manifest for 2014? What is your heart’s desire? What are the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors you envision for yourself in the New Year? With this perspective, the term “setting your sights” on something would more aptly be “setting your vision.” Take some time to access that inner vision to help you co-create with the Divine Creator the experiences you desire as you greet 2014.
New Year’s blessings to all, and a multitude of them!
